Hericium erinaceus — lion's mane — is one of the few edible mushrooms that has drawn serious neuroscience attention. The reason is a class of compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which stimulate the production of nerve growth factor (NGF) in cultured cells.
NGF is a signaling protein essential for the growth, maintenance and survival of certain neurons. Anything that reliably raises it is potentially interesting for neurodegenerative disease, nerve injury and cognitive decline. Anything is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
The animal studies are encouraging: improved myelination, faster nerve regeneration, better performance on memory tasks in aging rodents. Human trials are smaller and more preliminary, but a handful — including work with mild cognitive impairment — have shown modest cognitive improvements that reverse when supplementation stops.
This is not the same as saying lion's mane cures Alzheimer's. It is not. The clinical evidence is early, the effect sizes are modest, and the mechanisms in humans are still being worked out. But it is one of the more promising nutraceutical stories in current neuroscience, and it is being taken seriously by researchers who do not usually take mushrooms seriously.
